Academy Established to Create Pathways for Region's Juniors

RUGBY LEAGUE: The rugby league heartland of Mackay has received another boost, with the launch of a junior academy that will provide a clear pathway from the junior ranks to future stardom.

The academy program, an agreement between Mackay and District Junior Rugby League and the Mackay Cutters, will mentor players from as early as under-11s.

Chairman of junior rugby league in Mackay, Barry Blanchfield, said the academy program was the best way to develop young players in the wider region.

"It is a great program and it will incorporate the juniors, seniors, Cutters and also utilise the NRL development staff," he said. "The idea is to encourage participation in the game in the early years before tapering the groups that will ultimately form the Mackay's representative teams."

Cutters' CEO Glenn Ottaway said the program was about developing future Cutters and it was modelled on successful NRL development programs. …
