Childcare costs Mackay people 7.4% of their income.

Price have increased by 44.2% in the past five years.

MACKAY is one of the least affordable places in Queensland for child care, with people spending 7.4% of their disposable income on the service.

The statistics were revealed in a report from AMP and the National Centre for Social and Economic Modelling.

The report, Childcare Affordability in Australia, showed going back to work after having a child could be difficult for people, as waiting lists and prices for childcare could be long and high.

Mackay Family Day Care manager Penny McConnell said she was not surprised Mackay prices were so high.

Family day care is different from child care as people operate centres from their home, setting their own prices, with support from an over-arching organisation.

Ms McConnell said the price rises could be due in part to the implication of the national quality framework. …
