CARLISLE'S 1-1 draw in south Cumbria answered a lot of questions for manager Graham Kavanagh as he went with a younger-looking line-up for what is always a keenly-contested pre-season friendly.

There was an added edge for hosts Barrow who had three former Blues in their starting 11 - including longserving defender Danny Livesey who left Brunton Park after a nine-year stay last season.

Kavanagh said: "This game has shown me where some our younger players are as things start to step up. We were nowhere near the level of performance I want in the first half and that was disappointing.

"It doesn't matter whether it's a friendly or a league game, I want to see the same levels of intensity and determination to win.

"It's important we have a winning mentality right through the squad and we've possibly seen there are a few areas for us still to work on.

"We were better in the second half and I thought we deserved our goal, but credit to Barrow for giving us a very tough test. …
