Bus Blaze Numbers Fan Fears

A BUS industry leader has revealed the shocking truth about the number of Australian buses that have burst into flames in less than two years.

Michael Apps, the Bus Industry Confederation's executive director, said 60 buses had fires onboard in the past "12 to 18 months".

As many as 30 of these were considered "serious".

The latest incident was the horrific blaze on the bus that had been ferrying 61 Maroochydore High school students and three teachers on the Bruce Highway on Tuesday.

Miraculously, no one has been hurt in any of the bus fires.

For at least 12 months the bus industry and the federal and state governments have been aware of the concerns about the number of fires on buses. It is also an international issue, with the European Union investigating the problem.

Mr Apps said so far there was no "silver bullet", but changes to the way buses worked, to reduce emissions, had been identified as "a problem". …
