WHEN someone asked Rob Cross what he planned to do for his 50th birthday this year, he told them he was thinking of running a marathon.

When they said he was too old, he made up his mind.

So he's planning to run the marathon. And more.

He has turned his 50th birthday on August 17 into a personal challenge called Why? 50 which will see him complete one event every week for five weeks to mark each of his five decades.

Rob will warm up with the 5km Park Run, an event held every Saturday at Kawana, on August 16.

He will celebrate his birthday the next day with Tough Mudder at Caloundra.

He has a 15,000 feet skydive booked for August 23 and will line up for the Sunshine Coast Marathon on August 31, but is still looking for something to push himself with in between.

"I might take some surf lessons," he said.

Rob is inspired by people older than him who still keep in good shape - a man in his 60s who ascends Mount Tibrogargan once a week, three men aged between 70 and 90 who run the 5km Park Run, and a bloke who took up running at 59 and is still at it 20 years later. …
