Loved Ones Help a Dream Come to Life

IT ISN'T every day you witness a man being rolled down the road in a liftchair surrounded by a convoy of nurses and loved ones as you're on your way to work.

This was the unusual scene Josie Townsend stumbled upon as she recognised Noel Mahoney, a resident at her place of work, Beauaraba Living Aged Care, accompanied by a group of friends, family and staff.

Mr Mahoney, who requires the use of a VPAP machine to assist with effective breathing, had not yet been able to pay a visit to the new home he had designed and built with his wife Marie.

So after many weeks of careful planning and preparation, Mr Mahoney was wheeled in his liftchair out of Beauaraba Living and 500m down Weale Street in Pittsworth where he entered his home for the very first time.

Mrs Townsend had been working at Beauaraba Living for just over one week, and the scene cemented her observations that the aged care home was a community filled with compassionate staff and residents who genuinely care for one another.

Marie and Noel Mahoney's paths first crossed on a cruise 30 years ago.

They were completely swept up in a whirlwind romance and were engaged a short three weeks later.

Being able to visit the home they had designed and built together was an incredible experience for the couple, one which couldn't have occurred without the generosity and aid of a big group of people.

"We both cried, it was bittersweet," said Mrs Mahoney.

"Noel hadn't seen it since the frame was up in early February.

"The builder had a whole lot of progressive photos but he'd never been inside."

Mr Mahoney said when he finally got to look around inside, the result was even better than he had hoped.

"Noel has been a farmer for 75 years," Mrs Mahoney said.

"He's only ever lived in the one home."

Without such a supportive group of friends, family members, nurses and staff members from Beauaraba Living, most of who have also become good friends, the couple are sure the trip would not have been possible. …
