THE Gladstone Turf Club will celebrate the memory of one of its favourite sons with a new feature race -- the Wayne Wilson Memorial.

The $8000 race for BM 60 class horses and run over 1000 metres will be staged on Gladstone Cup Day, Saturday, August 9.

Wilson, 66, died in Brisbane in early June after staging a courageous fight against cancer that lasted for more than a decade.

From the age of 13, he called the Gladstone races for a lengthy period before establishing himself as one of Australia's best-known race callers.

He had retired from race calling four years ago but made a special pilgrimage to Gladstone for his last official call, the 2010 Gladstone Cup.

"Wayne Wilson made a magnificent contribution to racing in Gladstone for many years. The memorial race in Wayne's honour will be run here annually on Gladstone Cup Day," race club president David Weinert said.

He said Racing Queensland, together with the Gladstone Turf Club, had founded the race jointly, whereby it will carry $8000 prize money. …
