IT is of course good news that three of the local parks in the area of Newcastle I represent - Jesmond Dene, Heaton Park, and Paddy Freemans Park - have retained their Green Flag status after receiving considerable Lottery funding in recent years.

Volunteer "Friends of" groups are working hard to try to keep standards up, but it is often an uphill battle.

More volunteers are desperately needed, and I would urge local residents who enjoy the city's parks to consider donating an hour or two a month of their time to help out their local park group.

However, reporting of the 2014 Green Flag winners might also have reflected that under the previous Lib Dem administration, no fewer than 10 of Newcastle's parks regularly achieved this status.

It now appears that under Labour's stewardship, Gosforth Central Park, Benwell Nature Park, Tyne Riverside Country Park, Brandling Park, Leazes Park, Nunsmoor Park, and Elswick Park have been downgraded and no longer meet the required standard. …
