How to Be Easy on the Eye; All Eyes Turned to Health, Encouraging Aussies to Make Sure Those Peepers Are in Proper Working Order

WHEN was the last time you had an eye check, especially if you are over 50, wear glasses, or have a family history of eye disease?

Despite the fact 75% of vision loss is treatable, many Australians avoid having their eyes tested, according to the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO).

As part of its JulEYE campaign which kicked off last month, RANZCO's Eye Foundation is encouraging all Australians to discuss their family's eye health history and get an eye test.

A newspoll by the foundation found 48% of us have not had our eyes tested in the past year, which means many problems are not detected until it's too late to treat them effectively.

Vice chairman and Sydney-based ophthalmologist Professor Frank Martin said: "It's alarming that so many Australians don't take their eye health seriously.

"Vision loss continues to be a major and often overlooked health problem in Australia and that simply shouldn't be the case."

For those who think they're not old enough to worry, it's important to understand vision loss can affect people at any stage of their lives, he said. …
