Cows and Cars Don't Mix, Say Worried Cops; Call for Action on Wandering Stock

CATTLE can be a life-threatening problem on our highways.

For this reason Carmila police want Isaac Regional Council to develop a policy to combat it.

Officer in charge Senior Constable Luke Rowley said careless stock owners made it a widespread problem.

"Obviously with the nature of cows they're going to get out on the roads, but sometimes you have irresponsible owners who don't maintain their fences to a standard, and you have cows wandering on the highways and that can cause death," he said.

Snr Const Rowley said fatal traffic accidents had occurred when cars hit cows on remote stretches of highway.

"I'd just like to see a call to Isaac council to develop and implement, as a priority, a policy and procedure where cattle can be removed from roadways safely," he said.

"What we want to see is a safer roadway."

Snr Const Rowley said all police could do now was put a sign up to warn motorists of cattle on the road, but the problem was "cows can't read". …
