news: will Spitalfields be next to escape the wrecking ball? THE Government rejection of a major Smithfield Market redevelopment plan could help to save a street of classic Victorian warehouses in Spitalfields, say campaigners.

Secretary of State Eric Pickles this month refused an application by the City of London and Henderson Global Investors to demolish part of Smithfield and build office blocks. He said the proposal would cause "substantial harm to the significance of the Smithfield conservation area", and praised alternative plans backed by conservation groups. Spitalfields Trust campaigners believe the decision could set a benchmark, protecting the warehouses in Blossom Street which developer British Land wants to demolish, building offices behind the retained facades.
