Traffic Detoured after Power Pole Struck; All Lanes of San Jose Blvd. Shut Down Following Truck's Collision

Article excerpt

A large pickup truck slammed into a concrete power pole at San Jose Boulevard and Julington Creek Road just before 11:30 a.m., cracking it at its base and causing major traffic tie-ups at the busy intersection just north of the Duval/St. Johns County line.

The pole was leaning over the roadway and had to be replaced, according to JEA. An electrical wire hit at least one car, said the Florida Highway Patrol, which had initially detoured traffic down Mandarin Road as all lanes of adjacent San Jose were shut down.

One northbound and one southbound lane were reopened as evening rush hour started, said Sgt. Dylan Bryan.

"We had the intersection shut down due to the power outages and the JEA replacing the pole," Bryan said as troopers manually worked the intersection.

Bryan anticipated final repair at a few hours.

The pickup's driver, 25-year-old Nicholas A. Wolford of Jacksonville, was cited with careless driving and suffered serious injuries, according to the Highway Patrol. He was wearing a seat belt.

POLICE SAY 10-YEAR-OLD SHOT IN ARLINGTON

A 10-year-old girl was shot in Arlington Monday night, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Her mother said she heard a "pop" shortly after 7 p.m. and went outside their Rogero Road home to investigate, according to the police incident report. She saw her daughter on the ground a few houses down in the 2300 block with gunshot wounds to her legs.

She tried to call 911 to no avail so took her to a hospital, according to the report. The other parent said he was at work at the time. A 15-year-old also lives at the home.

Sgt. Bobby Lyle said at the scene that the girl is in stable condition but police were still investigating whether the shooting was accidental or intentional.

"We are obviously talking to witnesses and family members who were present at the time this incident took place," Lyle said. "I have detectives at the hospitals as well as on the street here to find out if there is any possible suspect information ... At this time that's about as much information as I have."
