MARYBOROUGH Masters short course swim meet will open the 2014 Maryborough Masters Games tomorrow.

And for many taking the plunge at the Maryborough War Memorial Aquatic Centre, just finishing is a heck of an achievement.

But don't be fooled, these seasoned athletes train hard and take their sport seriously.

"They cut through that water pretty good and some of these guys, especially some in their 50s or even in their early 60s, would give some young chaps in a lot of swimming clubs a run for their money," Masters Games president Doug Walker said.

"I'm not talking about ones that go down to state championships and win medals, but you get some who can do 1.04min for 100m, which is pretty good for some club swimmers."

Sixty competitors from as far as the Gold Coat and Rockhampton will contest four strokes from 25m to 400m in the 25m heated pool.

China Johnson, of Maryborough, and Jackie Ryan, of Sunshine Coast, are the oldest competitors at 86. …
