A NIGHT time knock of desperation on a Kyogle couple's door has seen a Brakes Direct Border Ranges Rally competitor dismantle the generous couple's car- just to complete the event.

When a gear selector cable on Justin Northage's Mitsubishi Mirage Cyborg broke during Saturday night's Woodenbong stage, the enterprising driver knocked on Bec and Andrew McIntosh's door with an unexpected question.

"We just went up, knocked on the door and asked if we could borrow the car to dismantle part of it and use the part on our car," Mr Northage said.

"We couldn't get on to any of the local wrecking yards so we drove through town and came across a Mirage in the main street.

"Much to our surprise they said yes without any convincing! It was easier than renting a hire car."

When Mrs McIntosh saw the looks on the faces of Nathan and his brother Mark, she said she felt sorry for them.

"I felt for him and he seemed like a nice guy and had come a long way to compete so I said yes," she said. …
