Overlooked Facts on Israel and Hamas

I would like to respond to David Jaffee's column "Palestinian View Is Often Overlooked."

History: There are many examples of ancient, documented and physical proof of Jewish existence in Israel. One of the oldest, a Hebrew stone text in Jerusalem from the 10th century B.C., predates any prior Hebrew inscriptions. Remains of Hebrew buildings from the fourth millennium B.C., are another example of physical proof that a Jewish community was established in Jerusalem.

Jewish habitation in Israel is also documented in the Bible.

According to legal historian Assaf Likhovski, the term "Palestinian" wasn't used until the 20th century.

Form of government: Israel's government is a parliamentary democracy where Arab and Jewish citizens have the same rights.

The rights of the citizens of Gaza are determined by their chosen government, Hamas.

U.S. aid: Since the mid 1990s, the U.S. has given approximately $5 billion to the Palestinians.

The Congress Research Service report "U.S. Foreign Aid to Palestinians" by Jim Zanotti, a specialist in Middle Eastern affairs, stated in 2013 "because of congressional concerns that the U.S. aid to Palestinians might be diverted to Palestinian terrorist groups (Hamas), the aid has slightly declined" and become subject to restrictions.

The money was intended to build schools, hospitals and "prevent terrorism against Israel from Hamas."

Not for Hamas to buy weapons.

Values: Jaffee states that columnist Susan Estrich feels that Israel is threatened by "extremists who do not value human life as we do." Many years ago, Golda Meir said, "I can forgive the Arabs for killing our children. I cannot forgive them for forcing us to kill their children. Peace will come when Arabs love their children more than they hate Israel."

The Hamas Charter in Article 18 states that a woman's "most important duty" regarding her sons is "to observe the religious injunctions in preparation for the duty of Jihad awaiting them. …
