We Must Not Lose the Spirit of Unity

A BANNER hung high in the stands at Hillsborough in memory of tragic Newcastle United supporters John Alder and Liam Sweeney.

"Death ends a life," it read. "Not a relationship." It's a pretty famous quote, from the memoir of a sportswriter Mitch Alborn called 'Tuesdays with Morrie'. Applied to John and Liam it seems so apt and so utterly poignant.

Newcastle return to St James' Park for the first time since their untimely passing on Sunday and for those who knew them it will leave them feeling bereft. For John in particular, Newcastle was his life and the team's return to the city will be an odd and upsetting experience for those who cared about him and his young friend Liam.

So it is uplifting to see the club react to their deaths both with gestures and action - most notably by creating a community award in their honour and also a memorial garden for them. Newcastle United meant so much to both of them that you cannot put a price on the club reacting in the appropriate way, which is something that they have done from the start of this tragic incident. …
