THE VILLAGE Sun BBC1 9pm NEW SERIES When it comes to history lessons, you can do worse than just turning on the television. Over on C4, The Mill has brought to life pre-industrial England, and now The Village, back for a second series, continues to recall major events in the 20th century through the experiences of one Derbyshire village.

"finds voice It all the elder MAXINE The creation of Peter Moffat, the Bafta-winning writer of such acclaimed series as Silk and Criminal Justice, it stars John Simm and Maxine Peake as the brutal father and long-suffering mother, John and Grace Middleton.

Principled and tough, they were determined to keep their farm going as the First World War loomed ominously on the horizon.

Now, as the six-part drama returns, they will be dancing to a slightly jollier beat. It's the Jazz Age of the 1920s and the trauma of the Great War seems to be a distant memory. This brave new world finds the Middletons and the other villagers embracing the new ideas about love, sex, politics - and dancing the Charleston.

"It was a joy to play someone working through a political awakening. It all stems from the death of her eldest son Joe and their joint dream to make the world a better place, which she is determined to do, whatever the cost."

The dairy farmer's wife is also attracted to Labour councillor Bill, played by Derek Riddell. "She is swept off her feet," admits Maxine. "She feels she has found a kindred spirit."

Naturally, this doesn't go down well with her husband John and her joy is short-lived. When he forbids her to vote, this leads to events taking an unexpectedly tragic turn. …
