DOUBLE dipping. That's what I call it.

Last year I did my tax return and got a few dollars back. Not many, but they came to me.

So this year I thought it would be much the same. It turned out that the ATO wanted close to a grand from me.

So I thought, "that can't be right", and off I went to a tax consultant.

We started going through the screeds and screeds of questions and came across one that said "Any overseas income", to which I responded that we owned a property in New Zealand, but the income stayed in New Zealand and I paid tax on it there. "It has to be recorded here," said the kind lady.

So we started to put down some numbers, as I could recall them out of my head.

And all of a sudden my tax bill went from a bit under a grand to a bit under $1500.

And all because of the income in NZ! …
