ALEX Hales' star is rising fast and Ravi Bopara's unexpectedly perhaps on the wane after their respective inclusion and omission from England's 15-man Royal London Series squad.

Hales, in the form of his life, appears to be in the frame to displace Ian Bell as captain Alastair Cook's new opening partner.

The selectors have given the uncapped 25-year-old the opportunity to carry his brilliant hitting from county limited-overs cricket and Twenty20 for England into the 50-over international arena.

Hales (right) joins a squad, announced on Monday night, which will be missing frontline seamer Stuart Broad - due to see a specialist soon to assess what to do about his long-term knee injury - and containing instead a back-in-favour Steven Finn for a five-match series against India, starting next week.

Bopara's exclusion, by contrast, is notable for a player who had seemed to cement his position at last and helped to balance England's options with bat and ball since returning against New Zealand last summer. …
