Karien Up with Best; Early Childhood Educator Is in Running for Queensland Title

SLADE Point woman Karien Karlsen has only been in family day care for a year but is obviously doing something right, as she has been recognised as one of the best early childhood educators in Central Queensland.

She has been named the regional winner and has gone on to state level and will find out if she is the winner for Queensland next month.

Ms Karlsen has a background in early childhood education and was chuffed one of her families nominated her for the regional Excellence in Family Day Care Awards.

She said it showed the families appreciated what she was able to offer.

"I was very happy," she said. "But I was very surprised because I'd only been doing it for 12 months."

Educating children is like second nature to Ms Karlsen, who has worked in the early childhood education sector for 25 years.

Having spent time managing long day care centres, establishing kindergartens and training others, she wanted to find a way to teach children on a more in-depth level. …
