It might be some time before Billy Elliot: The Musical heads out on tour but you can catch it at the cinema next month.

Empire Cinemas have teamed up with the country's biggest theatre companies to offer live stage performances on the big screen in its Empire Extra programme. Billy Elliot: The Musical will be shown at the Empire Cinema, The Gate, Newcastle, on September 28, broadcast live from the Victoria Palace Theatre in London's West End.

If you haven't managed to see the live stage show, this is a chance to experience something of its magic at a fraction of the cost of a trip to London's theatreland. There will be two performances, at 2pm and 7pm, and you can also catch them at the Empire Cinema in Sunderland.

The stage musical is based on the film by Lee Hall, from Newcastle, so this offers the strange prospect of seeing the film of the stage version of the film.

On stage Billy Elliot: The Musical has won more than 80 awards including 10 Tony Awards (America) and five Olivier Awards (UK). …
