Change Really Is Possible; Views of the North

IT is very easy and natural to avoid disruption and change in our lives. Most of us are content to enjoy the lives we have fashioned for ourselves and react unfavourably when someone suggests we should be doing something different. Our reaction is not always logical and we know it.

Many smokers for example know full well that smoking increases the risk of premature death and is expensive but still resist the pressure to change.

Often it is fear of the unknown that prevents change. This could be quite trivial such as not wanting to try a new food or very significant like taking a job in a different part of the country. Most of us are naturally conservative, but when change does happen, even if not by choice, we get on with life and enjoy the benefits of the new.

We might then wonder why we didn't do it earlier. This is frequently true about issues relating to our energy use. Scare stories about how difficult it is to change energy suppliers deter many. …
