Ricky May Be Just the Start for Black Cats; Ricky Set to Join but More May Follow Suit

Article excerpt

THE signing of Ricky Alvarez will kick off what Sunderland hope is a busy final day of transfer business, writes STUART RAYNER.

Premier League clubs have until 11pm to add to their squads for the final time this year.

The details were still to be completed last night, but Argentinian playmaker Alvarez's season-long loan from Inter should be con-firmed early this morning, allowing sporting director Lee Congerton to concentrate on targets. With only two from Micah Richards, Sebastian Coates, Danny Welbeck and Fabio Borini available on loan, Congerton may have some juggling to do this evening.

Last season 26-year-old Alvarez mainly operated in Inter's central midfield, but he also played behind the striker in a 'Christmas tree' formation. He has played on either flank for club and country and could be most useful to Sunderland on the left wing if, as expected, their pursuit of Borini ends in disappointment.

Alvarez earned his seventh Argentina cap against Nigeria at the World Cup, and would be Sunderland's fourth signing from the country since Poyet took over. He also has an Italian passport.

The Black Cats will reportedly pay an PS800,000 loan fee, with the option of making the deal permanent for PS8.8m.

Poyet will take his interest in Liverpool's Borini into the final day, but with Queens Park Rangers and AC Milan for competition, the PS14m fee the Wearsiders agreed over a month ago seems unlikely to be paid, while a loan would be problematic.

"Unfortunately we cannot give you all the true information why he's not with us," Poyet said after Saturday's first defeat of the season, 1-0 at QPR. "I know from the outside it looks like it's him not wanting to come to Sunderland but I promise you it's not." Sunderland could still make a signing from Anfield, however, with 23-year-old central defender Coates lined up for a seasonlong loan if they miss out to Newcastle United or Southampton on Atletico Madrid's Toby Alderweireld. …
