'My Kids Inspire Me Every Day'; on the Couch with Neil Meiklejohn

Article excerpt

HE'S a father, a husband, a councillor and a passionate volunteer, who is proud to call Warwick home.

Neil Meiklejohn was first elected as a councillor in March 2000 with the Warwick Shire Council, before being re-elected in 2008 with the Southern Downs Regional Council.

Pursuing a career in local government was a given for Neil, especially with his family history serving the community.

"Dad (Les) worked in local government for 20 years," he said.

"There's definitely a family history in local government."

Aside from his work with council, Neil has also been involved actively in the business community having previously owned a business himself.

For a decade, from March 1997 - October 2007, Neil owned the Eagle Boys pizza store in Warwick after five years working for the company's head office.

It was during this time Neil decided to go along to a Chamber of Commerce meeting - an organisation he is still a member of today.

"I walked away as president after that first meeting," he said.

"Being in the Chamber opened my eyes to other stuff - I really enjoyed that time."

Away from his many work commitments, Neil is a husband to wife Sharyn and proud father of two children - son Jacob and daughter Caitlyn.

Neil and his family are not strangers to hardship, after Caitlyn (or CJ as she's often known) was diagnosed with cancer in late 2012.

"We count ourselves blessed we have Caitlyn with us," he said.

"Some of the people we met on our journey - some of the children - have passed on."

Neil has an active volunteer involvement in a number of community organisations including the Red Cross, Cancer Council of Queensland, Relay for Life, Glennie Heights Scout Group and Warwick Swimming Club.

What are some of the things you couldn't live without?

My family, iced coffee, my volunteer involvement and nowadays my phone. …
