Redbacks Aiming to Break 26-Year Drought

MY walk to help promote a possible Warwick-Wattles grand final in the TRL is off, but now the Warwick Aussie rules boys want me to wear a Redbacks coat for a year if they win the grand final.

It is a great offer and if it happens please don't tell Joe Hockey, who might be after me for fringe benefits tax now he hasn't got the mining tax.

As Redbacks coach Jason Wright pointed out before a home semi this Saturday, a Redbacks win will be the first Warwick A-grade win in a Darling Downs footy competition for a long time.

The last Warwick team to win a Toowoomba/Darling Downs A-grade competition was the Warwick Cowboys rugby league side in 1988. Plenty of teams have won lower grades.

If we are saying first since '88, we better add men's as the Warwick women won the premier football in 2008.

This first since '88 is also about footy, not all sports, as the Warwick Wizards won the A1 hockey premiership in Toowoomba in 1997.

So if you see me in a Redbacks coat when it is wet and cold next year, remember it will be a celebration of the first Warwick A-grade men's footy premiership win in 26 years. …
