Byron Bypass a Trigger for Over-Development, Say Residents

THE proposed $10-million Byron Bypass has come under fire from a residents' group which has labelled it a waste of money and a 'down payment' on over-development.

Cate Coorey, from Byron Residents' Group, said that according to a 2009 traffic study, the bypass would only alleviate 10-15% of the traffic clogging Ewingsdale Rd.

The proposed route would extend Butler St on the western side of the railway parallel with Jonson St until Browning St, where drivers would turn left and cross the tracks.

But Ms Coorey noted that Byron Shire Council itself concluded from the 2009 'MR545 Study' that a bypass would have limited use.

The Council released a statement in 2009 which said: "Byron's traffic solution is about access not a bypass."

Improved access and traffic distribution in town was more important than a bypass because most vehicles are going into Byron Bay, not through it, according to Phil Holloway, Byron Shire Council's director of asset management services. …
