Coast Teen Poised to Qualify for Ironman Series

SURF LIFESAVING: The pressure is off Mooloolaba hopeful Luke Cuff in today's Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Ironman series trials in Tweed Heads following an impressive opening performance yesterday.

The 19-year-old was consistent on day one of the trials, finishing third and fourth in the two finals to put himself in pole position for a series berth going into today's final event.

"You don't really want to race the final race with a number on your mind, you just want to race to the best of your ability, so I'm glad I've given myself a bit of leeway and I can go in confident for tomorrow's race," Cuff said.

Cronulla veteran Nathan Smith was top of the field after winning the first two of three scheduled events, as 60 competitors battled for the four remaining spots in this year's series.

It was a mixed day for Sunshine Coast's top hopefuls in the men's field, with another Mooloolaba hopeful, Hayden White, finishing second in the opening event before losing his ski in a heat of the second and failing to make the final. …
