SERENA WILLIAMS will not rest on her laurels despite matching Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova by winning her 18th Grand Slam title here last night, writes Paul Newman.

Williams crushed Caroline Wozniacki 6-3, 6-3 with an awesome display of power that left only Steffi Graf's 22 titles ahead of her on the alltime list of Grand Slam champions in the open era. Williams is already thinking about taking another step towards that total. "I am thinking 19," Williams said after claiming her sixth US Open crown and her third in succession. "I'm taking it one at a time." Williams' triumph here followed a difficult year for the world No 1, who always measures herself by her success or otherwise in Grand Slam tournaments. The 32-year-old American failed to go beyond the fourth round at the Australian and French Opens and Wimbledon but was on her game from the start here. This was the third time she had won her home Grand Slam event without losing a set.

Wozniacki hit only four winners and three of them were aces. …
