JOHN Nicolson knew he had a passion for real estate when he actually enjoyed looking at houses when his parents moved to Canberra when he was a teenager, as most kids hated it. Starting in a suburban agency in Canberra in 1974, John spent the next eight years selling real estate, selling project homes and building homes before arriving in Ballina in 1983 to work for AV Jennings.

A year later, while taking a break from the industry, John and his wife, Jenni, started Beanz, the well-known Ballina salad and health food bar, selling it in 1988 to the present owners.

Starting with Riverwalk Realty (then trading as Elders) in 1989, John happily jumped back into real estate and now boasts 25 years with the same company (now trading as McGrath), becoming a director in 1991 and principal and licensee in 2010. Riverwalk Realty owns and operates McGrath offices in Ballina, Coolangatta and Palm Beach as well as having part ownership of McGrath Byron Bay.

The group of offices manage about 2000 properties and is on track to sell more than $3 billion worth of property this financial year, while employing more than 80 people. …
