A CARNIVAL lit up the Clinton State School grounds on Thursday night, as the school's annual fair featured rides and festivities from early evening.

It was a school night, but that didn't stop throngs of children, parents, teachers and community members from turning out to celebrate a special anniversary - the school's 40th birthday.

Boyne Island woman Maddie Condren enjoyed the fair with her step-daughter Jody, a Grade 2 student at the school, and daughter Danielle, a Tannum Sands State High School student.

"You don't realise how many children there are in a school until you've got them all in a field trying to get on rides," she said.

Clinton State School was founded in 1974 and currently has 852 students.

"It felt like they were all there," Ms Condren said.

The crowd included former principals and teachers who had begun their own education as pupils at Clinton.

Ron Alexander was principal at the school from 1985 to 1997. …
