MOAN? Complain? Me? Never! But I really thought that I'd have had an invitation to supper from daughter and son-in-law by now. It's almost a year since I helped them to move into their home ... and I'm still waiting.

I've been round for coffee loads of times and there was a hastily-arranged barbecue. There have been lots of excuses - the house is in chaos, they haven't got organised, they can hardly see the table for the stuff piled up that they're "about" to sort.

The latest excuse was that the oven thermostat was broken and it would cost so much to repair it that they were having to save for a new cooker.

However, I think it can only be a matter of time before the invitation will be popping through the letterbox - or arriving on a text.

Mother is in the good books. The Bank of Overbury has lent the money for a new cooker - don't worry, the repayment terms have already been arranged. So the broken cooker excuse can be crossed off the list. …
