Hundreds Rally for Coal Port Progress

ABOUT 600 people from the Bowen area and from as far as south as Gladstone congregated at the local showgrounds last night to lend support to projects that will provide a much-need boost to the region.

Organiser John Smith said while the attendance was down on what was originally hoped it was a good response.

Mr Smith said he was happy with the attendance as with Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jeff Seeney attending and the subsequent media attention, "We will get our message to a wider field.''

Mr Seeney spoke about of the Queensland Government's Abbot Point dredge spoil disposal plans.

"It's about using the dredged soil on land to enhance land that is owned by the people of Queensland that will be valuable port land in the future,'' Mr Seeney said.

"There are people in the green movement who will oppose everything all the time everywhere and I have no doubt, that there will be people who will oppose this because they are about opposing everything not about treating projects on their merits. …
