A BLOCKED sewer main in Alstonville has overflowed, spilling wastewater into nearby Maguires Creek.

Garry Bourke said the sewer main was already overflowing when he arrived at a Rosedale Place property at 6am yesterday to begin construction works.

Mr Bourke said he was concerned the overflow could contaminate the creek.

Ballina Shire Council water and wastewater manager Tim Mackney said the council was not informed of the overflow, and discovered it only by chance when nearby staff, undertaking routine maintenance, heard the water running.

"We had crews out there prior to it happening because during that major wet weather event we had the other week, all of the sewers were backed up with lots of water," he said.

"They were working extensively on the lines and had just stopped for smoko, and that was when they'd started to hear some water running, and the manhole had just overflowed."

Mr Mackney said a large foreign object had been lodged in the sewer pipe, causing the overflow. …
