SUNDERLAND weren't great as they carved out a decent point against Spurs on Saturday but one player was: Lee Cattermole.

That's four Premier League games so far this season and probably three occasions on which Cattermole has been the best player in red and white on the park. In the first two matches he was probably the best player on the whole pitch.

There is a gathering momentum on Wearside for Cattermole - once a mainstay in the England under-21 side - to be considered by Roy Hodgson for national team honours. Given Cattermole's disciplinary reputation and the stereotype of him as an unreconstructed destroyer of opposition danger men, it is not one that will go down well among people who don't watch him play every week.

Personally, I have been slow on the uptake with this one but that must come with a confession. Last year I wrote a glowing piece about Cattermole's improved disciplinary record and he proceeded to get sent off a couple of days later. …
