GLADSTONE: Hip replacements are now offered at the Gladstone Mater Hospital, following the arrival of a specialist orthopaedic surgeon and the improved co-operation between public and private health services.

Previously patients had to travel to Bundaberg, Rockhampton or Brisbane to access the surgery.

Hospital director Deb Wright said Gladstone Mater Central Queensland had worked closely with the Gladstone District Hospital to recruit specialists to the Gladstone area.

She said the appointment of Dr Gerard Kilian brought a sense of "satisfaction and accomplishment", and that his operations were well respected by his patients and staff.

"As a result of developing positive partnerships for the people of Gladstone, this means ... there is now local access to health services. This availability of orthopaedic surgery meets the unexpected demands of trauma, sporting and workplace injuries," Ms Wright said. …
