NEW York is home of the hot dog - so a Tyneside version was always going to be hard to swallow.

However, the newest addition to Greggs' range went down a storm in the Big Apple.

Representatives of the Newcastle-based chain armed themselves with hundreds of succulent sausages and fresh rolls before crossing the pond and touring some of the city's most famous landmarks including Times Square and the Statue of Liberty.

They also stopped off to give out their precious cargo to passers-by in Manhattan from a food cart, receiving the seal of approval from one of the street food capitals of the world.

Malcolm Copland, commercial director of Greggs, said: "Our product development team have been working hard to perfect the hot dog recipe.

"To ensure the product was 100% authentic we decided to give it the ultimate test by giving street food loving New Yorkers, who know their hot dogs better than anyone, the opportunity to be the first to taste test them.

"The feedback was outstanding, New Yorkers seem to love our version of the iconic on-the-go snack and we cannot wait for the UK public to have their first taste too."

Curio Curtis, who lives in the city which never sleeps, said: "I have been eating hot dogs for years and I can honestly say Greggs have nailed it.

"I would love for them to open a shop here in Manhattan selling hot dogs and some of their pasties I have heard so much about."

The hot dog, served in a freshly baked sub roll and topped with a choice of ketchup, mustard and onions, is available from PS2.50 and will be sold in almost 1,700 Greggs shops across the UK.

To celebrate the launch, Greggs is also offering a once in a lifetime trip to New York for one lucky customer.
