Hall Hosts Celebration of New Town's Success

THE region's largest business membership organisation joined with a local MP and one of Wearside's most respected organisations to mark the 50th Anniversary of Washington New Town.

The North East Chamber of Commerce, Sharon Hodgson MP and Gentoo held a drinks reception at Washington Old Hall as part of a series of events within the town to celebrate the milestone. The event was hosted by NECC chief executive James Ramsbotham, who said: "In just over 50 years Washington has grown from a collection of five or six small agricultural and pit villages to a town with a population of 67,000 and is home to some of the region's most successful businesses.

"The range of businesses in Washington is staggering and development of the area has enabled the town to accommodate companies of all sizes within the original seven industrial estates, Parsons, Armstrong, Stephenson, Crowther, Pattinson, Swan and Emerson.

Keynote speaker Peter Walls, former Executive at Washington Development Corporation and current chief executive at reception sponsor Gentoo, looked back at his time at the development corporation and its achievements. …
