PULLING together today's tribute for The Daily Examiner's long-serving journalist Lauretta Godbee was tough going, not only because it was upsetting to deal with her death and talk to other people that were also shocked and emotional, but more so because I could hear Lauretta over my shoulder the whole time saying "Lesley, I told you not to make a fuss".

It's quite obvious that despite Lauretta's well-respected and well-known profile in the community, she was an extremely private person, never one to chase the limelight or glory that is often seen in the media today.

She opted for the behind-the-scenes approach to journalism, letting her work do the talking rather than her mouth.

Thanks to Lauretta's family we were able to share the devastating news about our lovely friend and matriarch of this masthead earlier this week, and give people a chance to express the views that so many of us shared, in the very pages she so ably and generously filled across five decades. …
