IT sounds more at home in the desert than anywhere else but the natural habitat for Citroen's new C4 Cactus is more likely to be a supermarket car park.

For this is the car with the Airbumps - plastic panels fixed to the doors to protect against bangs and scratches.

Now that may not be the most attractive of features but Citroen has a history of going away from the norm and the Cactus manages to carry off its cladding with some style.

In brighter paint jobs the panels make the Cactus unmissable. Darker finishes result in a more functional, heavy duty appearance.

Without a doubt the Cactus is a car that looks like no other and the theme continues inside where the dashboard is centred on a 7-inch touchscreen flanked by a deep, lidded storage box in front of the passenger and a digital instrument display - although there is no rev counter - in front of the driver.

To enable the dash to be used in such away Citroen has mounted the front airbags in the roof behind the sun visors. The central air vents are A-symmetric with a larger outlet to the left and overall there is a minimalist feel to the layout.

Although smaller than a Ford Focus - the Cactus if 13ft 7ins long and 5ft 8ins wide - there is a good amount of space inside and it is of genuine family proportions. So is the boot which ranges from 358 to 1,170 litres.

It is a car which is not easy to pigeon hole but basically the Cactus is where a family hatch meets a crossover.

It's priced from PS12,990 for a 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol version or PS15,390 for a 1.6-litre diesel although in base level trim does not come with air conditioning or Bluetooth. That arrives on mid-range models where prices run from PS14,535 to PS16,735.

Top specification models start at PS15,990 for the 1.2-litre petrol or PS17,990 for the diesel and are well equipped with sat nav, a reversing camera, automatic air conditioning, auto lights and wipers, LED interior illumination and tinted windows. …
