Magpies Get Wings Clipped; Lions Heavy Defeat Caps off Frustrating Weekend for Mackay Teams

FOOTBALL: They ruled the roost in Mackay this year, but the Magpies have found their match.

In the wake of their Mackay Premier League premiership, Magpies fell to Burdekin in the Northern Club Challenge (NCC) grand final in Townsville at the weekend.

It was a second cup final loss for Magpies, having lost to FNQ Heat in the decider of the FQ Cup earlier in the year.

It was also a second loss to Burdekin, having lost to them early in the competition only to be granted a wildcard re-entry.

The NCC final victory means Burdekin have handed Magpies two of their four losses this year.

Magpies coach Rick Carroll said it was a disappointing result and described the game as "anticlimactic".

"After celebrations from our own final a couple of weeks ago it felt like the end of the season for us," he said.

"But you can't blame that; we've still been training and we really wanted to win.

"It wasn't a great game but they (Burdekin) came with a game plan. …
