AN 89-year-old died as a result of a blow to the head allegedly inflicted by another elderly resident of a Consett nursing home, an inquest heard.

Jennie Bryant died on July 5 after an incident at the Brockwell Court nursing home, Crook Coroners Court heard.

Dr Leslie Hamilton, assistant coroner for Durham and Darlington, was told the woman had died as a result of blunt trauma to the head following an alleged assault by another patient at the nursing home in summer.

Dr Hamilton: "She died due to an assault at the nursing home possibly from another resident.

"Investigations are being under taken by the police.

"A post-mortem was carried out by Dr Jenny Bolton on July 6 and at the request of the police a second post-mortem was carried out."

Mrs Bryant, who suffered from dementia, is believed to have argued on June 28 with a fellow resident.

The great-grandmother was hurt in the alleged row and was taken to the University Hospital North Durham for treatment to a head injury. …
