MOTORISTS faced a day of delays across the region after a series of accidents.

Two separate smashes on the A19 caused massive queues at around 7am and later in the day there were reports that a man had leapt from a bridge onto the A1058, causing delays in Newcastle.

Drivers faced long delays after five cars collided on the northbound carriageway of the A19 just before 7am, with four cars involved in a smash on the opposite side of the road only 10 minutes later.

That saw one lane on each side of the dual carriageway closed between the A690 - the Herrington Interchange - and the A183 at one of its busiest times of the day, bringing delays and misery to thousands who were trying to get to work.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: "The northbound crash, which was reported to us at 6.59am, involved a Subaru Impreza, two Mercedes, and two Toyota Yarises.
