Mackay North State High Students Pay Tribute to Fallen Soldiers

AFTER visiting Turkey, France, Belgium and Singapore, 28 Mackay North State High School students are now back home.

The group was the latest to participate in a series of commemorative trips made since 1999 to honour Australia's fallen soldiers.

The students were greeted by an excited group of parents when they arrived at Mackay Airport yesterday morning.

Tour organiser and Mackay North State High School history teacher Mike Goodwin said students had to research a soldier and prepare eulogies, which were read at the soldiers' graves or memorial sites.

"We commemorated 75 Australian soldiers," he said.

"These soldiers never came home from war.

"They never will come home.

"It is important that they will not be forgotten."

Mr Goodwin said students' showed genuine emotion.

"We laid down poppies at the memorial sites and graves," he said.
