ORLANDO | The bad news for people heading to Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios: There are clowns involved. Mean, malevolent, nightmare-inducing clowns.

The good news: Because so many people are freaked out by clowns, the lines at the Giggles & Gore Inc. scare house might be shorter than at some of the others. And Giggles & Gore has some really great scares.

It's one of eight scare houses at this year's Halloween Horror Nights, which is sort of the Super Bowl of haunted attractions. Attendance numbers are hard to come by, but it's safe to say there are thousands of people walking around the park. That means the lines can be very long - hours, in some cases. But it also means there are plenty of people to scream with.

This year's houses:

- Halloween - Based on the classic John Carpenter horror film (not the Rob Zombie remake). Of all the houses, this is the one most likely to throw a serious fright into you. Michael Myers, the masked killer in the film, appears at least 20 times in the house, popping out from behind doors and curtains with a large knife in his hand. "I think that one will just knock people out," said Jim Timon, Universal's senior vice president of entertainment. "Even if you don't know the film, it's still scary."

- AVP: Alien vs. Predator - Based on a series of sci-fi films. This one relies heavily on puppetry, animated Aliens and Predators jumping out at you. But there are also plenty of live actors to keep you jumping. Mike Aiello, director of entertainment and creative development for Universal, said this was a very difficult house to design and execute. "It scared us the most, creatively," he said.

- From Dusk Till Dawn - This one skirts the line between scary and sexy, with plenty of bikini-clad vampires dancing and murdering their way through a biker bar.

- The Walking Dead: End of the Line - Follows the most recent season of the hit AMC series, from the prison to Terminus. This is the largest house Halloween Horror Nights has ever done, with nearly 60 "scareactors."

- Dracula Untold: Reign of Blood - This house is based on a film that doesn't come out for a few weeks. …
