BMA 'Misleading' Workforce; 'New Mine' Tag Only in Place to Enable Different Working Conditions: CFMEU

A UNION believes BMA is misleading workers by claiming Caval Ridge is a new mine.

CFMEU district president Steve Smyth said Caval Ridge Mine was only an extension of the existing Peak Downs Mine.

"Caval Ridge and Peak Downs Mine are part of the same mining lease," he said.

"The infrastructure and the lease was already there.

"The reason BMA has decided to call it a new mine is so they can introduce different working conditions."

Mr Smyth said Caval Ridge Mine staff would work under worse conditions, compared to their Peak Downs Mine counterparts.

"The roster conditions are only one example," he said.

"At Peak Downs, staff have general protection around rosters, which means before a roster change can be done it needs approval from the majority of staff.

"At Caval Ridge, management can change the rosters as they like.

"This is only one example of a range of conditions which are being taken away. …
