THERE were seven ties in the first round of the Tyneside Amateur Challenge Shield.

The pick of the games saw last season's finalists North Shields Athletic Reserves and Newcastle Chemfica Reserves face off again.

It was Shields who came out on top in May's final, but it was Chem-fica who took an early lead - David Jones nodding the ball into the path of Daniel Kenny who fired home.

Leeroy Odd restored parity and then Anthony Skipsey ran through to give Athletic the lead.

However, Chemfica refused to lie down and Andy Macbeth levelled the scores from close range. Odd, however, turned his defender and volleyed home to make it 3-2 on the half-hour, but Craig Robinson ensured it would be all square at the break as he fired home from the edge of the box.

Nicholas Bramwell nodded home a free-kick to give Shields the lead again with 25 minutes to play, but a fine free-kick from Jamie Briggs looked to have secured extra time with just two minutes left. …
