Times-Union sports columnist Gene Frenette grades the Jaguars game against the San Diego Chargers based on performance, injury, circumstances and effort.

OFFENSE

C There was a lot to like in the first half with QB Blake Bortles (29 of 37, 253 yards, 1 TD), who provided an instant jolt in his first start. He moved the chains almost effortlessly by throwing to six different

receivers, including a perfect TD pass to TE Nic Jacobs. But it all fizzled in second half. Not converting two fourth-and-1s was a killer.

DEFENSE

D You knew Jaguars tormentor Philip Rivers (29 of 39, 377 yards, 3 TDs) was going to put up numbers, and he made it look easy. The Jaguars did a nice job with tight end Antonio Gates. But covering WRs Keenan Allen and Eddie Royal, who both had 100-yard games, was another matter. The pass rush hasn't been there since first half of the season opener.

SPECIAL TEAMS

B+ For the first time this season, Jordan Todman provided a nice spark with three kick returns of at least 30 yards, the first leading to a TD. …
