BALLINA MP Don Page has dismissed claims by Labor his government has plans to privatise the Byron Shire Central Hospital.

Labor has accused the state government of harbouring plans to privatise the soon-to-be-built hospital after Mr Page revealed this week that he wanted private providers to deliver surgical services there.

"The money is in the budget and we categorically pledge that the hospital will remain in public hands," Mr Page said.

"What we are looking at is finding a private operator who can deliver day surgery five days a week."

Byron Shire Council last week refused to provide support for the NSW State Government's proposed plans for the new hospital because it does not include an operating theatre that will provide surgical services.

Yesterday NSW Labor deputy leader Linda Burney, Shadow Health Minister Walt Secord, Labor candidate for Ballina Paul Spooner and Federal member for Richmond Justine Elliot gathered at the existing Byron hospital site to announce that if elected State Labor would guarantee the hospital would be a government-run facility with day procedures such as colonoscopy and endoscopy. …
