A STRONG contingent of athletes will fly the flag for the Mackay Triathlon Club at Bowen tomorrow.

Among the Mackay contingent will be several athletes stepping up into the Spring Distance Tri event for individuals and teams. The 750m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run event is being run in conjunction with the Enticer event (375m, 10km, 2.5km).

Mackay's Stephanie Allen will be treating the Bowen event as a warm-up for her first Olympic distance event in Noosa later this month. Taking up the sport just 12 months ago, Allen is excited by the Bowen challenge, having done just two club events at these distances before.

"I'm nervous, but I'm excited too," Allen said.

"I'm keen to see how I perform in this event, to see how much I've got from the eight weeks of training for it.

"It will be a good trial for the Olympic distance event in Noosa."

Allen believes the Bowen event will give her a gauge on what will be required to tackle the 1500m swim, 40km ride and 10km run of the Olympic distance event. …
