SILVER pianos, rare artworks and cabinets made in the shape of coffins are just a few of the curios to be discovered on Secondhand Saturday this weekend when more than 600 garage sales will be held across the region.

Goonellabah artist Sharon Sinclair is preparing her sale of gothic-style cabinets and book shelves in the shapes of coffins along with cartoon-style artworks.

"I moved to the area from Toronto on the Central Coast a year ago and I am still trying to establish a market stall," Ms Sinclair said.

She has joined forces with three couples for a sale on Saturday on Centenary Drive for the biggest day of garage sales on the North Coast.

Education co-ordinator for North East Waste, Linda Tohver, said the aim of the Second Hand Saturday was to promote the re-use of goods and materials instead of disposal, saving resources and environment.

"More than 600 garage sales will be on offer throughout the North Coast region, with tinnies and trailers to kayaks and pianos on offer, street garage sales, giveaways and fundraisers," she said. …
